Preparedness for Real Life

Helping our urban neighbours prepare confidently for the emergencies they're most likely to experience.

Most Emergencies Don't Happen in the Wilderness

Every year, families across Canada experience events that temporarily disrupt everyday life—power outages, severe weather, apartment fires, neighbourhood evacuations, flooding, and infrastructure failures.

When these situations happen, most people aren't heading into the wilderness.

They're going to a community centre, a hotel, a friend's home, or an emergency shelter. Many are simply staying in their own homes while waiting for essential services to return.

We Believe Preparedness Should Fit Real Life.

  • Prepare for Likely Emergencies

    • Extended power outages
    • Severe weather events
    • Structure fires
    • Flooding
    • Wildfire smoke
    • Temporary evacuations
    • Water service interruptions
    • Infrastructure outages
  • Preparation Should Fit Everyday Life.

    • Make preparedness part of household maintenance—not a separate hobby.
    • Keep essential emergency supplies organized and easy to access.
    • Store emergency supplies where they're easy to access.
    • Rotate food and batteries regularly.
    • Review your plan every 6–12 months.
  • Carry What You Can Realistically Manage.

An emergency kit isn't useful if it's too heavy to carry when you need it most.

Preparedness should increase your mobility—not reduce it.

  • Personalize What You Need

    Prepare for your personal needs

    • Family emergency plan
    • Important documents
    • Emergency contacts
    • Prescription medications
    • Supplies for children or pets
    • Mobility or accessibility needs

    Add practical emergency essentials

    • Water treatment and storage
    • Reliable lighting
    • Emergency communications
    • First-aid supplies
    • Warmth and shelter
    • Other essentials appropriate to your situation
  • Every Item Should Solve a Real Problem.

Instead of asking: "What should I pack?"

Ask: "What problem does this solve?"

    Examples:

    • No power → Lantern
    • No drinking water → Water purification
    • No phone battery → Power bank
    • No information → Emergency radio
    • Minor injury → First aid kit
  • Confidence comes from understanding

Equipment is only part of preparedness.

Knowing how and when to use your equipment is an important part of being prepared.

This is why education is such an important part of Urban Go Prep.

We don't just want people to own emergency supplies.

    We want them to know:

    • when to use them,
    • how to use them,
    • why they matter,
    • and how to adapt when circumstances change.

Meet the People Behind Urban Go Prep

We're Richard and Donna, founders of Urban Go Prep.

Like many urban dwellers, we wanted to feel better prepared for unexpected emergencies—but we quickly discovered that much of the emergency preparedness industry focused on wilderness survival, tactical gear, and worst-case scenarios.

That didn't reflect how we believed most households actually experience emergencies.

We believed there had to be a more practical approach—one focused on sensible planning, useful emergency supplies, and helping people prepare for real-life disruptions with greater confidence.

Urban Go Prep was built around that idea.

We select products based on their practical purpose and usefulness, and we assemble our emergency kits with the goal of making preparedness simpler and more manageable.

Our goal isn't simply to sell emergency supplies. It's to help our neighbours become better prepared without making preparedness complicated or overwhelming.

Thank you for visiting Urban Go Prep. We're pleased to be part of your preparedness journey.

Warm regards,

Richard & Donna
